GIMP
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program, previously General Image Manipulation Program) is a free software, raster graphics editor used to process digital photographs and other graphics. Primarily, GIMP is widely used as a tool for photo enhancement. I use GIMP and recommend it, although I agree that the learning curve is a little steep and the interface a little awkward.
